India Reports Human Case of Avian Influenza

Amidst Global Bird Flu Scare

New Delhi, 22 July 2021:

Indian health authorities have reported the country's first human case of avian influenza, also known as bird flu. The World Health Organization (WHO) was notified on 21 July 2021 by the National IHR focal point of India.

The case involves an individual from Kerala, a state in southern India. The H5N8 strain of avian flu has been identified as the cause of infection.

Amidst the global outbreak of bird flu, India has intensified its surveillance of virus strains, particularly in light of the recent devastation caused to animal populations in other countries.

Over 12,000 ducks have reportedly died in Kerala due to the H5N8 avian flu, according to the Agence France-Presse (AFP).
