Sou Fujimoto's Vision Comes to Life
Ishigaki Island Welcomes a New Architectural Landmark
Acclaimed Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto has unveiled his latest masterpiece: Not A Hotel Ishigaki, a captivating tropical resort nestled on the southwestern shores of Ishigaki Island in Okinawa, Japan. This unique project, conceived for hotelier Not A Hotel, offers a refreshing take on hospitality, blending modern architecture with the island's natural beauty.
The resort's defining feature is its circular base, creating an intriguing foundation for the floating disc-shaped villa that sits atop it. Fujimoto's vision for the project was to evoke the shape of a "flat round stone," drawing inspiration from the island's rugged coastlines and verdant landscapes.
The villa's most striking element is its undulating green roof, resembling a wave cresting over the circular base. This organic form serves as a functional and aesthetic element, providing shade and shelter while adding a touch of whimsy to the landscape. The roof is adorned with lush greenery, creating a harmonious connection with the surrounding environment.
Startup hospitality brand NOT A HOTEL has recently launched sales for Ishigaki Earth, Fujimoto's innovative green villa in Japan. This move comes a year after the project's initial announcement, generating much anticipation among travelers and architecture enthusiasts alike.
